Is it possible to become a much better photographer in just a week? Yes, it is, and the Digital Photography Workshop Cruise has been using its unique teaching methods to make that happen for the past ten years.

Once again, this fall, the workshop will sail from Boston to Halifax and St. John in Canada and then to Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine on October 21-28, 2012 aboard Royal Caribbean’s luxury liner Jewel-of-the-Seas.

Attendees will capture images available only once a year –during the colorful fall season– in locations that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. On the itinerary are tucked-away fishing villages, country churches surrounded by brilliantly-hued foliage, powerful tidal surges that reverse river flows, bagpipers, lighthouses, a U.S. National Park and one of the world’s largest Titanic memorials.

The workshop has become known worldwide for its “visual awareness” training that enables attendees to become better photographers in a very short period of time as they are taught to quickly recognize critical visual elements that all great pictures have in common. Images shot by past workshop participants have appeared in national magazines and books and some former attendees have even become professional photographers.

Instructors will give lectures, demonstrations and answer technical questions in the workshop’s private, high-tech, conference room and will also review images that attendees have made that day. Past participants cite those sessions as the reason for being able to rapidly improve their photographic skills and begin shooting pictures that they had never “seen” before.

“The give and take at the review sessions is one of the most valuable parts of the experience,” says Elizabeth Phillips, from Pennsylvania, who attended last year’s workshop. “I could see my pictures getting better each day as a result of the excellent feedback from the professional instructors on board.”

Another former workshop participant from California, Chris Nelson, agrees. “I took this workshop a few years ago not expecting very much except a chance to see a few new places and shoot some pictures. But soon I realized I was experiencing a whole new way to quickly grasp the key elements of ‘seeing’ which, of course, is what making great images is all about.”

Shihan Yuzo Goda gives a cameo appearance as the Fight Judge. Shihan Goda is a Karate Master and an Executive Advisor to the Kyokushinkai Martial Arts Organization, which has branches in more than 120 countries and boasts over 10 million registered members.

Alex Heartman as “Antonio”, an antagonist of Masa. He is best known for playing Jayden Shiba, the Red Ranger, in the latest Power Rangers incarnation, Power Rangers Samurai. His role as a Power Ranger, gave him a 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards Nomination.

Masashi Odate plays Rikio, a sensei who provides discipline and guidance in Masa’s life. Odate is an accomplished martial artist in the Kyokushin style whose acute acting talent has earned him the opportunity to appear in such high-profile films as Letters from Iwo Jima, directed by Clint Eastwood, and The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise. He has also worked with Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner Louis Gossett, Jr. in the film, All In.

Savannah Outen plays Amanda, Cynthia’s best friend, and also performs three songs for the film’s soundtrack, including the piercing ballad, “Rise Up.” Outen has topped music charts on Radio Disney since 2007 and has now over 380,000 subscribers and more than 77 million Youtube views.

The makers of Zentrip have sifted through their user and physician research surveys and compiled the best ways to beat seasickness and other forms of motion-sickness before it strikes.

Seasickness is very common and very treatable. But, it can afflict a toll on those who have it through its sensations of dizziness, vomiting, sweating and the general facial appearance of pallor (not the kind that’s easily disguised with makeup).

Before learning the tips, you should know the cause of seasickness: it’s generally thought to be an imbalance in the inner ear, creating an internal battle to keep one’s balance and spatial orientation in light of the fact it does not match what our sensory system is telling us.

In a way, seasickness can easily be triggered when your eyes focus on a stationary page while your body continues to register the movements of the vessel. This confuses the brain and sets off “alarms” that may result in dizziness or other symptoms of seasickness.

Any of these tips can work alone or in tandem with an inexpensive over-the-counter medication that contains meclizine which blocks a chemical messenger to the brain. It is also an antiemetic, helping to prevent or lessen the effects of all the uncomfortable sensations before or after they strike.

1. Eat light before going aboard. Avoid greasy and acidic foods that can come back to haunt you if you become seasick. Light, salty crackers, are good snacks. Once aboard, try to avoid food odors if you feel the effects of seasickness.

2. Avoid alcohol but drink plenty of water. Keep hydrated.

3. Get plenty of fresh air but avoid irritating gasoline and diesel fumes. If you do get dizzy when down below, get outdoors.

4. Try to stay in the middle of the boat, amidships, since there is less lurching. Often, the lower decks of a ship are calmer, with less horizontal and vertical motion, both contributors to the turbulence that precipitates seasickness.

5. If you have suffered a bout of seasickness, then do not read. Leave the book at home or in the cabin.

6. Stay away from folks who are sick since it could trigger a sympathetic response in you the same way someone coughing in a theatre can incite others to cough.

7. When on deck, look off to the distance, focusing on the horizon    a point away from the rocky boat or ship you are on    in order to keep from getting dizzy. Avoid looking at fast-moving scenery, such as boats passing quickly.

8. Try facing forward. This way, the forward motion of your body will closely match what you see.
