Frommer’s® Announces the Top Travel Destinations for 2007

Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) November 28, 2006

The results are in! The experts at Frommer’s–the market leader in travel guides–have announced a list of the most unique and enticing destinations near and far for travel in the coming year. From exploring the wonders of ancient history in Ethiopia to biking through the finest vineyards in British Columbia, there are loads of exciting adventures to embark on in 2007.

“This year, the editor’s at Frommer’s and Frommers.com scoured the globe and polled our stable of authors and experts to identify twelve surprising, thriving, or emerging travel destinations,” said Kelly Regan, editorial director, Frommer’s. “After careful thought and deliberation, we are thrilled to announce our picks of the places not to be missed in 2007.”

Frommer’s top destinations are (in alphabetical order):

    Asheville, North Carolina

Located in the Smoky Mountains, Asheville is a small college town with a thriving arts, culture, and gay & lesbian scene. It is home to the Biltmore Estate, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, and Carl Sandburg’s birthplace in nearby Flat Rock. Recently, Asheville has been drawing literati and celebrities who had gravitated to New Orleans as a hub of culture. With the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby, the area is also great for driving tours and shopping trips to numerous crafts and pottery shops (pick up a hand-made broom).

    Ethiopia

A surprising choice, Ethiopia has finally emerged out of the shadows caused by years of political strife, economic hardship, and famine. Improved infrastructure has made traveling there increasingly popular, especially among independent-minded travelers and those seeking adventure. Ethiopia is revered for its rich history as one of the earliest Christian kingdoms (the

town of Aksum is said to be the home of the ancient Ark of the Covenant). Visit the monolithic churches of Lalibela–in particular the Church of St. George, named after Ethiopia’s patron

saint, which is carved into the shape of a cross and is perhaps the most exquisite of the monolithic structures.

    Glen Canyon, Utah

Glen Canyon is home to Lake Powell, created in 1963 with the opening of the Glen Canyon Dam, which backed up the Colorado River and flooded the canyon. Several years of drought have lowered the lake level so drastically (by more than 140 feet) that the landscape has been transformed, revealing intricate rock formations that have been hidden for decades. One formation is the Cathedral in the Desert, a sandstone amphitheater that has been underwater for so long that it does not appear on most maps. The politics swirling around the area are equally

fascinating, with groups like the Sierra Club and the Lake Powell Institute lobbying for draining the lake once and for all. The recreation industry here is huge–houseboating, fishing, and water skiing are among the sports that keep the lake busy most of the year. Given how environmental circumstances are changing the landscape, book your trip now!

    Krakow, Poland

Amazingly, Krakow–the capital until 1609–survived the destruction that befell the rest of the country during WWII and is now, with its amazing historic landmarks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the things to see are the gargoyle-bedecked Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), a medieval covered market still bustling with tourists and street vendors; Wawel, the royal castle; and the 14th-century Gothic Kosciól Mariacki (St. Mary’s Basilica), with its intricate spires. Wandering the cobblestone streets of the Old Town (Stare Miasto), aged landmarks coexist amid a modern shopping scene. The town may have a rich history, but it has its feet firmly in the modern world–wireless internet access is everywhere, and festivals throughout the year (especially in summer months) showcase cutting-edge music and theater. Look for the first-edition Frommer’s guide to Eastern Europe, which releases in March of 2007.

    Minneapolis, MN

A Midwestern city already known for its gorgeous city layout and its fine arts community, Minneapolis is experiencing a cutting-edge design boom. The blockbuster new Guthrie Theater (now located in the Mill District along the Mississippi) is a sight to behold–a sleek, dark-blue steel building designed by the architect Jean Nouvel. The Walker Art Center has been expanded and also in the works is an addition to the Frank Gehry-designed Weisman Art Museum at the

University of Minnesota, which some say evokes his later, more famous Guggenheiim Bilbao.

Though winters are harsh, Minneapolis is a fantastic place to be outside. Alongside the

Mississippi is a series of lakes that wind through downtown, where you can bike, jog, or just hang out. The Guthrie’s new location, with its spectacular views of St. Anthony Falls, is also bringing more traffic to this neighborhood, in addition to shops and restaurants.

    Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

This lush region of British Columbia, dubbed by some as “Napa North” or “the Tuscany of Canada”, boasts a mild climate, with rolling hills and a growth of plentiful fruits, nuts, and grapes. Vineyards are the big business now–with more than 120 in the region, it is an ideal place for wine tasting. As in Napa, the topography and climate of Okanagan Valley make it a great place for hiking, kayaking, and biking (bike tours will even take you from winery to winery). The gateway to the region is Kelowna and the center of the wine region is a town called Naramata.

    Panama

Panama has much of the same appeal as a destination like Costa Rica — rainforests, volcanoes, and snorkeling. Panama City is the only metropolis that has a rainforest within the city limits, and on a clear day, hikers at the summit of Volcán Barú can often see both oceans at the same time. Isla Coiba, once home to a penal colony, is now part of a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that has the second-largest coral reef in the eastern Pacific. Here, you can see snarks, dolphins, turtles, whales and other big marine life. For a tropical beach experience, go to one (or several) of the 1500 islands off the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts. To get to Panama, you can fly directly from the US on American Airlines, through Miami, and on Delta, through Atlanta. For more, see our first-edition Frommer’s guide to Panama, releasing in Dec. 2006.

    Portland, Maine

A university town (Bowdoin and U Maine) and burgeoning retirement location, Portland has a fantastic mix of culture and education. It also has an impressive amount of first-rate restaurants, with several perennial entries on Gourmet magazine’s “America’s Top 50 Restaurants” list–including the excellent Fore Street, which builds its menu around local ingredients. The weather can be extreme, but Portland is an eminently walkable city, with the downtown area compact enough to explore thoroughly, and an excellent indoor farmer’s market that is open all year round. For those seeking outdoor adventures along the coast, there is a jogging trail that stretches from Portland to nearby Brunswick. Conveniently, Amtrak has instituted service to Portland from Boston’s North Station, making the city much more accessible from the Northeast corridor.

    Portland, Oregon

Situated one hour from the Cascade Mountains and one hour from the Pacific coast, Portland serves as a convenient hub for the area’s excellent outdoor adventure opportunities–from summer hiking and mountain biking to winter snowboarding and downhill skiing on Mt. Hood, and kayaking and fishing on the Columbia River. Portland, an environmentally friendly town, has revitalized its waterfront along the Columbia River as part of an overall commitment to responsible urban development. Along the riverfront is one of only three US-based sake manufacturers, in which you can tour the facility and participate in a sake tasting. Foodies are starting to recognize Portland for its flourishing restaurant scene, especially in the Pearl River warehouse/loft neighborhood. There is also nearby Willamette Valley, a wine region touted for its up-and-coming Pinot Noirs. For a unique place to stay, check out one of the several hotels run by the McMenamin family (http://www.mcmenamins.com)–our favorite is the Kennedy School Hotel.

    Tokyo, Japan

A hyper-urban experience that is cheaper than London and New York, Tokyo is surprisingly easy to explore (even for people who don’t speak the language). Public transit is manageable and the city is very walking-friendly. Visit neighborhoods like Shimokitazawa, the Greenwich Village of Tokyo, with its prevalence of cafes, small boutiques, thrift/vintage stores, and cheap noodle shops. Omotesando, Tokyo’s version of the Champs-Elysees, is a wide boulevard populated with designer boutiques and home of the new Omotesando Hills Mall, designed by noted Japanese architect Tadao Ando. If you are a sports fans, attend a Sumo match or check out a baseball game with one of Tokyo’s two resident teams, the Yomiuri Giants and the Yakult Swallows.

    Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Island

Virgin Gorda is home to the laid-back Little Dix Bay resort, originally built by Laurence Rockefeller. You can take jeep tours of the island, hike through the jungle, or explore funky Spanish Town and its unassuming bars and restaurants. Best of all, you can hang out at the Baths, a string of beaches where giant boulders form tranquil pools and grottoes flooded with sea water. An excellent way to experience this island chain is through bareboating (renting a boat–with crew or do-it-yourself–to sail from island to island). We recommend the charter company the Moorings (tel. 888/535-7289 or 888/952-8420 in the U.S. and Canada, or 284/494-2332 in the British Virgin Islands; http://www.moorings.com). The British Virgin Island is especially alluring because it is more off-the-beaten-path than other islands and cruise ships are too large to dock there.

    Zurich, Switzerland

Clean, beautiful, and affordable, Zurich is a must on any traveler’s trip to Europe. Rent a bike (it’s free) and explore the city’s progressive, art-filled culture. Every September, Zurich hosts the “Long Night of Museums,” an event where museums (as many as 40 are participating this year) stay open all night and visitors can go from one to the other, have a drink, and take in the art–all for a fixed price (25 SFR, including public transport). The city is also the home of the annual street parade, a huge, citywide dance party that takes over the city for one Saturday in August. Like the lovemobiles in Berlin’s loveparade, themed floats with club gear-clad revelers make their way through town blaring techno and rave music. Crowds follow the procession and everyone, young and old, dances in the street.

      P&O Cruises Announces Landlubber Winners

      (PRWEB) August 25, 2011

The cruise line was overwhelmed by the success of the landlubber appeal, which attracted thousands of entries.

Aimed at tackling misconceptions about cruising head-on, the competition asked Australians to let them know what was stopping them from taking a holiday at sea.

Jenny Lourey, Senior Vice President of Carnival Australia which operates P&O Cruises, said the cruise line had anticipated it would receive about 500 entries, so was astonished when almost 3000 people entered.

The six winners include a family from Glenwood in Sydney’s west, as well as couples from Queensland’s Cedar Grove, NSW’s Brunswick Heads, Chatswood on Sydney’s North Shore, Warana Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and the South Australian mining town of Coober Pedy.

Ms Lourey said entrants to the competition had most commonly expressed concern about the limited entertainment and activities onboard cruise ships as well as seasickness.

“We’re really looking forward to putting all our winners on a Pacific Islands cruise on September 9 so that we can show them their fears are unfounded,” Ms Lourey said.

The cruise line will film the winners throughout the cruise, posting regular blogs and video streams.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Ms Lourey said. “We think that our landlubbers’ experiences will help demonstrate to many other Australians that any concerns they have about cruising are founded on myth.

“Almost half a million Australians took a cruise holiday last year and that number is continuing to surge as more and more people appreciate how easy and relaxing a cruise holiday is.”

Ms Lourey said NSW and Queensland had accounted for more than 70 per cent of entrants in the promotion which was launched in July. To enter, people were asked to upload a video or photos accompanied by 200 words, explaining their reservations about cruising.

To view the winners visit http://www.pocruises.com.au/landlubbers

For bookings and information on cruise holidays visit the P&O Cruises website. Alternatively contact a licensed travel agent or P&O directly on 13 24 94.

Pauline Frommer Announces Top Budget Destinations for Summer 2008

Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) May 7, 2008

At a time when fuel, food, and even the price of postage are more expensive than ever, an affordable summer vacation may seem to be slipping out of reach. But there are still plenty of places, both in the U.S. and abroad, where travelers can enjoy beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures, wine tastings and spas, and unique cultural experiences–without breaking the bank. Pauline Frommer, series editor of Pauline Frommer’s Travel Guides, has selected ten top budget destinations, from romantic getaway spots to family faves to exotic destinations for adventurous travelers.

Here they are, in no particular order:

          Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

America’s first spa town–even George Washington came to take the waters here!–is still a delightful and very affordable spot to get pampered. At the historic Bath House in Berkeley Springs State Park (tel. 304/258-2711), a soak in 102-degree thermal waters and a Swedish massage starts at just $ 40. Berkeley Springs offers quaint shops, horseback riding, golf, excellent hiking (in nearby Capacon Resort State Park) and, of course, lots of history. Many travelers combine a stay here with the Washington Heritage Trail self-guided driving tour, which follows the first President’s footsteps through the Eastern Panhandle of the state. Area accommodations are reasonable, starting at $ 70 (down to $ 45 in nearby Martinsburg), and even less if you camp.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

One million acres of wilderness traversed by 1,300 miles of canoe-able waters makes this spectacularly beautiful area a top pick for nature lovers and fisherman. The fecund waters here are fin to fin with trout, walleye, bass, and northern pike. Experienced outdoors people simply grab a canoe, a fishing license ($ 17-$ 24), a camping permit (done by lottery, average $ 44 per group), supplies, a tent and go. For novices, local outfitters like the Rockwood Lodge (tel. 800/942-2922 or 218/388-2242) in Grand Marais will supply all equipment and food for 2 to 4 adults for 5 days for $ 342. Other reputable outfitters and tour companies include Wilderness Outfitters (tel. 800/777-8572 or 218/365-3211) and Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters (tel. 888/226-6346 or 218/388-2296).

          Midcoast of Maine (Rockland, Maine)

Rough and tumble Rockland now boasts a blossoming arts scene, helmed by the superb Farnsworth Museum (a top-notch collection of American art with works by Maine natives Andrew Wyeth and Louise Nevelson). You’ll also find a slew of small galleries and a fine dining scene spearheaded by an enterprising group of Culinary Institute of America grads. Rockland is one of the two top harbors in Maine for Windjammer cruises; kayaking is terrific, too. Since it is so centrally located, it’s a good jumping-off point for visits to pricier resort areas like Kennebunkport, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and Camden. Rockland offers a wealth of mom-and-pop motels and cute little inns; it’s not difficult to find places to stay here, in the peak of high season, for as little as $ 85 a night.

          The Wisconsin Dells

Let’s hear it for “The Waterpark Capital of the World!” More than 20 waterpark resorts soak visitors in this scenic city on the Wisconsin River. That comes to more than 200 waterslides combined, as well as watercoasters, ocean-wave simulators, raft rides, and extreme tubing for all ages. Day passes to the larger waterparks are usually around $ 30 to $ 35; check the website of the Visitor & Convention Bureau for complete listings and links to area parks. The Dells is also a golfing, fishing, and rock-climbing hot spot. Room rates at the big resorts can be steep but less expensive motels abound, with rates starting at just $ 40 per night.

The Oregon Coast, including Willamette Valley

The choice for romantics: Inland lies Willamette Valley, a winery-laden mecca for oenephiles and foodies (and a much cheaper vino experience than Napa). Towards the sea is a misty, beautiful coastline dotted with lighthouses and historic towns (such as Astoria, the oldest community west of the Mississippi River). Highlights include the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area; Yachats, an artistic community with excellent eats and un-crowded beaches; and along the coast, spectacular fishing, wildlife viewing, and leisurely beachcombing and kite-flying. An Oregon Pacific Coast Passport (tel. 800/551-6949) grants access to all of the state and federal parks and recreation areas for only $ 10 for a 5-day pass or $ 35 for an annual pass. Many area accommodations are moderately priced from $ 75 a night, cheaper if you camp.

          The Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the king of the affordably priced, all-inclusive package destinations, especially during the summertime when all Caribbean isles slash prices to lure visitors. SuperClubs’ Breezes Puerto Plata Resort, Spa & Casino offers package deals that include accommodations, all meals and premium brand cocktails, unlimited use of sports facilities, and hotel taxes, with no tipping allowed. A recent price check yielded rates of $ 70 per night per person from June to August. Also, CheapCaribbean.com has a selection of all-inclusive packages starting from as low as $ 499 per person for 5 nights.

          Newfoundland, Canada

Newfoundland remains an almost criminally overlooked destination in Canada. This craggy island, known as “The Rock,” offers some of the country’s best views in the summertime, when you can spot icebergs, puffins, and whales off the Bonavista Peninsula. St. John’s is a small, bustling city makes a good jumping-off point for exploring the foggy Avalon Peninsula, home to puffin colonies and caribou herds. And Gros Morne National Park (a World Heritage Site) offers excellent bird-watching, fishing, and hiking. Campground fees range from $ 18 to $ 30; call 877/737-3783 or 514/335-4813 to reserve a site. To save the most, avoid conventional hotels and stay instead in the tiny B&Bs that dot the region and sometimes charge as little as $ 50 a night.

          The Mayan Riviera, Mexico

Sparkling white sand beaches, cerulean waters, Mayan ruins, and dozens of water sport opportunities have long made the Mayan Riviera a “go to” place for fun in the sun. In the past several years, a Hurricane Wilma-driven makeover has turned it into a playground for chic, luxury seekers as well. The sheer volume of hotels and condos on this coast keeps competition stiff. But the air/hotel packagers are getting deals individuals can rarely match. Vacation Travel Mart is selling a full 5 nights/6 days at the Grand Oasis, including all food and drink, most activities and airfare from the U.S. from just $ 724. In certain lesser known areas, like the beautifully preserved Colonial city of Campeche, hotel prices drop to just $ 45 a night.

          Peru

Peru is a country with a surplus of great adventures, many of them an excellent value for the money. From Cusco, a scenic train journey can take you to Puno and Lake Titicaca, where you can visit the floating islands of Uros on a day trip ($ 12) or enjoy a true cultural immersion by staying overnight with a family ($ 15). The most elegant city in the county is perhaps Arequipa, known for its white volcanic stone buildings and a worthwhile jumping-off point for an excursion to the Colca Valley to observe giant condors. Southern Peru is a top surfing destination, and the Peruvian jungle is not to be missed–enter in the north via Iquitos, near some of the Amazon’s best lodges. For those interested in the famed Machu Picchu, local companies such as Peru Treks will take you on an all-inclusive 4-day trek for as little as $ 300; American-based companies such as Adventure Center offer 7-day Cuzco and Machu Picchu tours for $ 595. Accommodations across Peru are largely budget priced ($ 30 a night on average), thanks to the backpacker hordes.

          Bulgaria

The strength of the euro has made much of Europe a budget-buster for American travelers, but it’s also an opportunity to explore less heavily touristed areas of the continent–such as Bulgaria. Bulgaria, Europe’s oldest state (established in 681), doesn’t yet have much of a tourism infrastructure, but it’s quite safe and boasts ancient monasteries and beautifully preserved medieval villages along with affordable spas and Black Sea beach resorts. Visit the country’s tourism agency at http://www.bulgariatravel.org. Accommodations usually range from $ 50 to $ 100 for budget B&Bs and guesthouses and full Mediterranean meals can be had for just $ 6 or $ 7.

Cruise Market Watch Announces 2009 Cruise Line Market Share and Revenue Projections

Miami, FL (PRWEB) November 28, 2008

Cruise Market Watch updates 2009 cruise industry market statistics based on current economic conditions and anticipated new ship builds.

              Among the 2009 highlights:

Total worldwide cruise passenger capacity will increase 7.0% over 2008
Annualized total passengers carried worldwide in 2009 is estimated at 16.5 million
The total worldwide cruise market is estimated at $ 26.9 billion, a 1.4% decline from 2008

While cruise lines will significantly increase passenger capacity with the addition of new ships, pricing pressures to fill them in 2009 should negatively impact per passenger revenues. However, the combination of attractive pricing, innovative ships designs for select traveler markets and significant marketing efforts around the astounding new ships will provide opportunity to introduce new cruisers to the cruising experience. This will stimulate market growth for the industry through 2011. By the end of 2011, revenues are projected to increase 13.5% and passengers carried 13.8% from 2009.

With cruise line stocks Carnival Corp (NYSE: CCL) and Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL) trading around 70% off 52-week highs shares appear oversold, according to Ryan Wahlstrom, founder and publisher of Cruise Market Watch. The cruise industry has seen fears of overcapacity before. In 1990 new ship construction by cruise lines resulted in the addition of 15,000 berths – a 26% increase from 1987. Cruise lines proceeded to perform exceptionally well over the subsequent two decades. With cruise currently accounting for just 2% to 4% of market share for the total vacation industry, there remains plenty of room for growth.

“It’s all about creative ways to get the cruise line’s brand in front of non-cruisers,” comments Wahlstrom. By partnering with non-travel brands that resonate with a given line’s target market and by communicating the experiences of the ships, such as spas or exotic destinations, prospects that are already vacationing in other ways will try a cruise.
